Bush House has a long and colorful history. Built back in the 1850s, it was known as the John Hodges Bush Hotel, named and built by John Hodge an original settler of the Greytown area - and , later it became affectionately known as the Old Morison's Bush Pub -  where travelers and drovers would stop over for the night, settle their stock in the paddocks surrounding Bush House -sleep over in the drover's cottage have a meal and a pint.   It has been said that the Bush Hotel was the birth place of the first child born to a settler in the Wairarapa.

Built about 1850.

Ghost Story
Anyone spending a night in the east side of the building the side showing in the above right photograph, may well experience something unusual.

Many times during the evening while the Rodgers family and  guests as well have been either sitting in the lounge area or sleeping in one of the bedrooms on the east side if Bush House, the sound of horses and cart wheels on the gravel drive being lit up quite brightly with gas lamps has sent everyone running to the window to see who it is - and the family have at various times elected to go outside and see who it is, only to find that there is no one there some of us have seen it going past the window and have noticed the cart wheel marks and hoof disturbance on the drive.  We all sit and sleep on the other side of the house now - not because we are frightened but because it became such a damned nuisance getting up and down all the time.  This building holds a lot of history - probably drunken brawls as well as laughter and sadness - even so it has a nice warm and friendly feeling about it - don't take my word for it - come see for yourself.
